We’re excited to share a big step forward for The Heights: the successful completion of environmental cleanup at the former Hillcrest Golf Course.
From day one, we knew soil contamination was a challenge largely due to the historic use of mercury-based fungicides and petroleum products during the golf course’s operation. Working closely with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the Saint Paul Port Authority led an extensive soil remediation process to ensure a safe foundation for future homes, parks, and businesses.
Between August and December 2023, more than 110,000 tons of contaminated soil were safely removed from the site and disposed of at a permitted landfill. Additional monitoring confirmed that the remaining soil now meets the strict standards for residential use, clearing the way for new development. Continuous air testing during cleanup showed no mercury in the air, affirming our commitment to community health.
This achievement underscores our values of sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community wellbeing. We’re proud of our team and partners for the successful clean-up and taking this step toward a cleaner, healthier future for The Heights and for Saint Paul.
